The dialogue wasn't nearly as bad as you're saying. It wasn't perfect by any stretch but not that bad. Robert Downey Jr was quite good as Stark. Better than I expected. He nailed the character well, though I still think of Stark as more than just intellectually imposing. I always though he should be played by a taller and more imposing actor.
I wasn't happy with Terrence Howard as James Rhodes. IMO, he didn't seem to be tough and hard-balled enough to play a marine. Too bad they chose him instead of someone like a younger Wesley Snipes.
I wasn't particular thrilled with the changes they made to the Obadia Stane story-line. In the books, he owned a separate corporation that takes over Stark's company and is a cold bastard. Jeff came off as too much of a nice guy at first. Stane was never a nice guy. Ever.
He also doesn't get blown up by a reactor. After Stane as Iron Monger is defeated (or on the verge of defeat), Stane realizes he can't win and commits suicide rather than get captured. While not as impressive as seeing the reactor go boom, it would've been far more in character and true to the story.
The bit at the end after the credits was nifty, though Jackson was the model for "Ultimate" Nick Fury, not the Nick fury thatis in the mainstream Marvel universe. the Avengers inniatiave is also a part of the ultimate universe. Sitll, very nifty!
Agree with everything else you said, i.e. CGI, etc.
