The best way to teach a child to read is to read to the child. Spend lots of time and point at the words and sound them out and snuggle and encourage. You can do it with the Mac manual if you want to. Any book will do, but it's a one-on-one process and it requires lots of repetition. I must have read "Where's Nicky?" 400 times with a friend's daughter. She liked the sound of the book, so that's where we started.
