They're not just for butter anymore.
Take the knife by the blade and smack the heavier handle-end around the edge of the lid of the bottle/jar you'd like to open. Rotate the bottle/jar and continue smacking away at the lid 4-8 times. Now the offending bottle/jar should pop right open. If the lid still refuses to open repeat smacking the bottle, this time slightly harder and in different locations (you'll see little dents.) This has never failed to work for me.
