They probably fill with nitrogen. There is no controversy about nitrogen. It has significant benefits for aircraft, spacecraft and racing cars. For passenger cars it is utterly useless and is purely a marketing scheme used to attract customers ("If it's good enough for the space shuttle, just think about what it'll do for your car!"). Oh, as far as tires are concerned, go to the Tire Rack website and look through their ratings, tests and user opinions. You'll soon figure out which tires are good and which not so.
