Glad you are already halfway to salvaging these two iBooks. Always nice to read successful Mac salvage stories.
Friendly reminder (which you probably already know anyway), installing a hard drive in either the 12" or 14" iBook is almost a complete disassembly. Proceed with caution. Use a walkthrough and figure out a method of keeping track of parts and screws before beginning. Good luck.
