Also, it was pretty common out here for somebody who "needed cash" for some emergency to offer to fill your tank using "their" card, and taking a discounted cash amount "because my baby is sick" or whatever.
And not *entirely* unrelated, ARCO stations here in the South Bay (San Jose/Santa Clara/Silicon Valley) have been hit with augmented card readers that have been giving out account and PIN numbers as customers swipe their cards.
I only go to one ARCO station, but have made it a habit to check the card slot for high mopery.
