Fabric Protection for a New Sofa?

I just bought a new sofa and the sales guy asked if we wanted to spend an additional $75 for Teflon fabric protection. I declined, but now I wonder if there is any merit to this. The sofa is synthetic fiber and has a fairly dark, two-toned color that I think would hide stains fairly well. Would purchasing the protection be worth it?
