No real nice way of saying this..., but a lot has changed if you're going to make FMP into a robust solution. There are a lot of ways to mimic the old v4 strategies, but they will likely not produce anywhere near the solution that taking advantage of the v7 and later features has to offer, so newbie and digestion, don't readily go hand in hand. Perhaps if you described what you are trying to accomplish, it might lead to a more succinct recommendation, otherwise you probably will be burdened developer oriented and highly esoteric referrals...
There may be similar solutions already in existence that would be an easier springboard for you, rather than trying to figure out what part(s) of the new FMP environment you'll need to take advantage of for your new project.
