I'm very particular about my mouse setup and needs, and I use the Logitech MX518, in conjunction with the utility SteerMouse
Works perfectly, And because SteerMouse allows you to set up all of the buttons differently for each application, I can get dozens of uses from each of the buttons.
(I used to be a huge fan of USB Overdrive, but the developer stopped working on it and it just didn't work any more with most mice)
