Initially, it can be assumed that iTunes would be used on the computer, therefore, typically "dinky" speakers. The equalized has two main purposes... 1) to help offset the inadequacies of your speaker system, and 2) tailor the sound to your specific preferences.
I happen to have a hearing deficiency in the high end spectrum and I set my equalizer to help compensate for that. I am glad that I have that option.
