MacBook will not sleep, should Apple replace the battery?

I highly doubt they'll replace a battery that is not defective just because of some hypothetical future shortened lifespan that could potentially result (from their point of view) from the owner not calling applecare until way after the problem started.

Why don't you call applecare before going to the genius bar. Their phone support is generally excellent and it's right at the end of your phone.
