Dakota, I absolutely defy you to feed yourself on the monthly food stamp allotment. Clean out your kitchen and start with nothing, and feed yourself for a month on $162. Go right ahead and try it.
I can eat out for $6 a day. I do so now. Besides, are food stamps supposed to provide ALL your nutrition needs? Are we talking about people who make NO money? Who are they and why? See, this is the problem with all social programs. They eventually go bankrupt because of abuse. If I was running welfare I would extend benefits to people who are truly disabled. My criterion is simple. If you can live at home by yourself, you can work. Things like I don't have transportation, or need childcare or "can't find work or dozen other excuses are not good enough. Now, how many will be covered under my plan you think? One more thing, welfare case loads after the welfare reform act dropped 50% at places. We were warned there will be children starving on the sidewalks if the bill passed.
