Yeah, as long as you point the files to iTunes it can play them back even if they aren't in the library.
But adding is different because you'll recall there's only 1 "iTunes library location" in the prefs.
You may be on the path to a RAID of some sort that will permit you to grow with everything in one place.
Personally, I find iTunes restricting in this way, as well as the inclusion of the video files within the music folder bad db management.
