You are making it seem worse than it was:

Assuming he meant 47 states, he'd have one left to go in the Lower 48.
"Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it.”
Those two states were not under consideration, and are not part of the previous sentence.
You have a nice gaffe there that you can cite, don't try to make it seem that he said "one" and then listed two states. Don't be greedy.
