Rush is not a politician. He is not asking for your vote and doesn't need it. He doesn't have to be "fair". He is not afraid of offending this or that group. He says what he believes and those who agree with him listen to him. He did not start his program by running focus groups to see what people want him to say.
People who despise him are often caught in a quandary. He is supposedly so far on the fringe that nobody could possibly listen to him and yet none other than the president of the United States pits himself personally against a man that nobody apparently listens to. Can't have it both ways.
Incidentally, the GOP this time went with a candidate that Rush despised and lost big. What does that tell you?
