It is.
If you're not up for an hour or more of worrisome work and careful tracking of many tiny screws then it helps to have a tech-savvy friend.
Unfortunately, the capacity of the original drives on those puppies is laughable by today's standards.
If you're not using it away from your desk all that much, perhaps the best solution is an external (FireWire) boot drive. You'd almost certainly see a big speed increase running off of a modern 3.5-inch SATA drive in a FW case.
