eBay as a company also has no conscience. They develop a culture of secrecy and take no responsibility when they help fraud happen.
I had a major issue with my account several years ago, and they refuse to provide any contact information other than email for dealing with a customer complaint. At one point, I demanded they provide me with a location to FAX my complaint and with a full contact (name, etc), and they simply refused.
I have a friend in a major bank, and here in Minnesota they process 10s of thousands of dollars in scams from eBay EACH MONTH. They absolutely hate it - and they seem to have no recourse to deal with that company.
Years ago, if you tried to cheat someone at a flea market, you were not invited back to sell your wares. When it happens at eBay, you change the spelling on your name - and voila! - you are ready to scam again.
If you have an issue with a seller at Amazon, you have somewhere to go to complain.
If you sell via Craigslist, you get to at least look at what you are purchasing and meet the seller in a public place if you want to.
I have two relatives that used to sell via eBay, and they have moved on because they so disliked the environment.
