Golf clubs are an awful analogy, as you could buy a used set of Callaways for $50, and they're just as good as a new $200 set of Wilson's, more-or-less.
In my opinion, a Mac provides a modicum of more bang for the buck, but it becomes "obsolete*" just as fast as any other piece of commodity electronics.
*This, too, is subjective, as I have quite a few working Macs and PCs of "vintage" status, which are still bootable and in use daily.
