An old freezer finally died about 5 years ago while we were away on vacation. Yup, it was full at the time. No, it wasn't the freezer manufacturer's fault - the machine was just over 40 years old.
Called up my homeowners insurance agent and told her what had happened. She asked me to approximate the loss ( sent her a digital image) and she sent a check for over $500 after deductible. YMMV, but contacting homeowners can't hurt, no?
