Among other things, in the U.S. the kid probably wouldn't have gotten his laptop back.
Municipalities usually find an excuse to snag the good stuff for auction under the premise that it was used or involved in the commission of a crime. Then instead of being auctioned, it'd somehow end up on a cop's desk at home.
I'm waiting for one of those recovery apps to snap pics of THAT event.
