The article has more to do with the car-centered suburban development pattern of the past 60 years:
More driving and less walking and biking increase obesity and all of its health problems. Many people would love to bike and walk to work, but their homes, schools and workplaces are completely unfriendly to any mode of transport other than cars.
This photo always spoke volumes to me:
