Are Washer/Dryer Pedestals worth it?

I bought a front loader and it was defective. First load of wash the damn thing failed to enter the drain cycle. I was stuck with a washer full of soapy clothes and could not open the door or all the soapy water would drain on to the floor. The repair man disconnected and moved the washer to the yard, laid it on its back and removed the clothes from there. What a pain.

I ended up sending the thing back and getting a trusty top loader.
