Some laptops have the HD attatched to the underside of the CD bay.
Good thing to know one starts ripping a case apart to find where they've hidden the HD.
Good thing to know
Who designed the tray-loader iMac innards? So close... yet, so far...

I'm guessing it was the crack team who brought us the 840AV/8100/8500 and the 7100.

yeah, the team was on crack.
I had a 7100, and still have a 9500 at work, so i know what you mean.

I have one of the original iMac 233 Rev A's. It doesn't like to boot to CD either. I've tried numorous times, but I think that the problem is with the USB keyboard. I don't think the driver loads until after the OS starts booting from the HD, at least that is how it has been ever since I put OS X on it. I could get it to boot to CD in OS 9 or Yellow Dog Linux. That old boy is at the end of his rope, but he's served me well and still runs like a champ. I upgraded the CPU to a 400 G4 and it has 512 mb RAM and a 120 GB hard drive, but the boot partition can only be 8 GB and it will only recognized 80 GB on the rest of the drive so...When I was upgrading the CPU I got it down to about 7 minutes to take it apart fix the connections and put it back together again. Inevitably, something popped out or didn't line up correctly during the reassembly. Cracking that back pannel off is scary the first few times. I thought that I'd broken something for sure.

Cleaning out unused printer drivers will clear out over a GB of space. And Monolingual to clear out unneeded languages if you haven't already.
