RANT: I HATE Automatic Transmissions.

I normally prefer manual transmissions. However, in urban areas where there's a lot more stop and go type driving, manuals are a pain. So much so that I would not drive a manual in urban (or suburban) areas as the primary vehicle.

Chiming in here...

1) Manuals faster? Not necessarily. My college roomie had a 70 Cuda 340 with a slapstick auto that was super fast.

2) The need for speed is overrated. That's why insurance is so expensive for 16 year olds.

3) Remembering correctly, Chip lives in Boulder Co or thereabouts....for routine driving in snow, an auto is way better. It's much easier to control your speed. With a manual, every shift is just like you touched the brakes, just inviting wheels to break loose. One bad downshift and you're doing flippy spinny things.

Manual transmissions are certainly more fun, and if I was buying a sports car or sports sedan, then I would most likely get one. But who want to drive a sedate family vehicle with a manual? You already can't have fun in such a vehicle, so now you want to work at having no fun as well?

Furthermore, a manual can be rather tiring in bad stop-and-go traffic. Once the traffic subside and the road opens up it's great though.

I agree that manual shifting is WAY more fun to drive. I love when i get to borrow my friend's Mustang. However, my commute to work isn't what I'd call a fun drive and I wouldn't want to have to fool with a manual everyday.

My rule:

Two-seat car ==> Stick

Four-seat car ==> Auto

I assume you don't like power brakes & steering as well. And no power locks, windows or auto-dimming mirrors. And scratch the power seats with heat & memory off the options list as well. And get used to leaning across the passenger seat, rolling down the window and adjusting the mirror.

You'll appreciate these things when you get older, my boy.

I drove an Audi A3 with the DSG transmission last year. It was a revelation. DSG transmissions are the future.

Stupid people are stupid people, so the same ones who would be shaving orr applying make-up would do the same in a manual transmission car.

I was forced to take my driver license test in a VW Beetle.
EVERYONE should know how to drive a car with a manual transmission.

In all the years I've been driving, I only had one car with an automatic.

The DSG is a beautiful transmission (manual transmission with two computer controlled clutches). Tiptronic I find to be just as sloppy as a regular automatic (since Tiptronic is an automatic). I've never gotten used to shifting with these transmissions, though, so I just let the car do its thing and find no enjoyment from it.

Really? I always found it quite fun to tear away from the 911's in my manual transmission minivan on the curvy mountain roads, only to have them pass me on the straights, then I'd catch up to them in the curves again. I have no idea why so many 911 & other sports car drivers wouldn't or couldn't go faster on the curves, but it provided me with hours of fun confusing and irritating them with my minivan.

One key advantage of a manual transmission: it won't drive away from you if you hop out of the car with the car still in drive, it'll stall out while you're still in the car and you'll realize your stupidity first. Yes, I've hopped out of automatics in drive before when I was in a hurry and then had to run after them.

felt the same way chip, until i was about 30

then it wasnt worth the hassle anymore

i do miss downshifting in a curve or at an off-ramp, but i bet not a lot of people even use their stick that way

talk to me in 10 years

I love heel and toe downshifting into a corner, hitting the apex just right and accelerating out.
