Carter's failure with this raid was a triumph of Murphy's law. Anything that could go wrong did, and not everything that went wrong was predictable or preventable. Such operations have little latitude for bad fortune no matter how much planning is involved. A little more "luck" and Carter would have been a hero.

So true. As one article I read put it, a failure could have destroyed his presidency. There is always great risk when attempting something like this.
