Can't tell what the max RAM is without knowing the model number--what model?
Dell Inspiron 8100. Everything I saw on the web says 512 max, but who knows how old that info is:

Inspiron 8100 Memory Specifications
Standard Memory 128 MB (removable)
Maximum Memory 512MB
Memory Expansion 2 sockets
Memory Comments PC133 SDRAM SODIMMs
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 11 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~863 Mhz
Model Comments 133MHZ FSB, Intel 815ep Chipset

Currently running XP SP3 with all updates

The chipset on that computer is limited to 256MB SDRAM modules, so 512MB is all you can put in it.

What do you plan to use it for?

Maybe that will speed things up enough to give it to some needy kid, but, if not what free (since I'll be giving it away and I already have the RAM and time invested) OS should I try to make it more usable?

I live in a large community with a cadre of landscapers. They are usually willing recipients of cast off computers that I try to make usable rather than discarding.

Those words weren't blue the first time you wrote them ... guess I should make more of an effort to read all the words in the future.

Anyway, XP on a 900Mhz P3 with 512MB RAM won't be a speed demon, but it would be usable for some off line stuff. I don't think it would do well with the web the way it is these days.

Me too. I'm at least equally guilty.
