I dumped Safari!
#11
I restarted my MBP 1 hr 25 mins ago according to iStat.

Safari is now using 1.11 GB of real mem and 1.11 GB of virtual memory. 4 windows open with approximately 50 tabs.

Safari 5.0.5, OS X 10.6.8.

OS 10.6.8 with latest Safari (5.1). It kept leaking memory, spinning beachball, crashes. Used Click-to-Flash and Click-to-PlugIn for quite a while, but still problems. I've always used Safari and am not a heavy browser user, but it's become a real hassle.

I am still in Safari 5.0.5... seems to hold up pretty well for me.

I was very unhappy with 5.1/10.6.8 for some of the same reasons, plus it broke 1Password for me. Very bad!

I tried to change back to the previous version by moving a copy of 5.0.5 from a backup to my active Applications Folder.

It worked… and it didn't. There were some problems, which I understand were due to the 5.1 webkit, which I was told wouldn't go away just because I brought back a copy of the previous Safari version.

I've have managed to get 5.0.5 working pretty consistently, but every so often my settings revert to the defaults and there are other glitches that didn't occur before the 5.1 update. Sad

As far as I can tell, the only way I can go back to 5.0.5 is to reinstall the older version.

I've been trying to find a way to install a fresh freestanding version of 5.0.5, but no luck, so far. Does anyone know if there's a Safari 5.0.5 installer available somewhere? There is a 5.0.6 installer available, but it only works with Leopard. It wouldn't install to Snow Leopard when I tried it.

Do I have to go all the way back and reinstall Leopard and then update to Snow Leopard in order to get back to the older version of Safari or is there a shortcut?

Does anyone have an answer?

Safari used to be good, but it is not now. Same with Firefox.

Google Chrome is fast, but not as user friendly

I think I'll stick with Safari 5.0.5 and 10.6.7 - seems to be fine.

I use Safari at home, no real issues other then it plays video slowly, like You Tube. (G5 dual 2.5) FireFox plays them much better.

At work I use Camino

What do you mean by not as user friendly?

Not as many little fun plug ins and such. After using Safari for so long I like the way it's lay out.

But Google Chrome is super fast on my computer for netflix etc I don't like that is signs me out of gmail all the time.

To be fair, I have not given it a lot of time.

I'd like to know also. I took to Chrome like a baby to candy. Although
I prefer iCab with iOS. My nephew is a Graphic Artist and Web Designer
and turned me onto Chrome with my MacBook and the iMac and I
haven't looked back.
