The 1 and 1.5TB was more. Rang .up at 96 and they matched for the last two they had. Will decide about 2nd one this week.

It's 30MB/sec over USB.

I've run all sorts of drives, dating back to 2004 (in the past 2 months) in external cases, both bus powered
and with wall warts, and via the AJA Testing Suite for drives, none passed 30MB/sec.

To discover they actually put something like a Scorpio Black in these boxes would just be totally insane
(but I'd be perfectly happy with that for a later date, when they would be removed).

The thing that bothers me about all these new drives is that they
keep making them cheaper and cheaper and in order to do so
they have to be cutting cost somewhere, machining, bearings,
etc. That bothers me, I'd rather pay a little more for quality.

again, I think they are just moving them out - because of USB 3. The Mac can use it as a USB 2 drive.

They want those USB 2 boxes OUT -- even when they are selling them less than 1TB USB 3 externals.

Agree w/ Jimmypoo but don't rule out loss leader.
I think the thing driving the drop in cost for externals is the case design-- seen one lately? They're made out of nothing . . .
