Where to get a treadmill?
#11
Craigslist has a lots of treadmills for sale...I'll search them out. Is nordictrack the best? I want something quiet (whisper quiet if possible).

I find the Healthrider brand to be really quiet. My buddy just bought a nice one from Sports Authority for $499. The same company actually makes nearly all of the low end (less than $2000) treadmills from Healthrider to NordicTrak to ProForm.

I've worn out 3 treadmills over the past 17 years. If there is "anything" you ever want to get an extended warranty on, it's a treadmill. Especially if you use it everyday. I love using the treadmill, I use these Sony headphones because they're really resistant to sweat.

Sony MDR-V150. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-V150-Moni...B000092YPR You can usually find them for just $20 bucks and they sound fine. Hook it up to the TV or my iPod and I'm good to go. I never run on a treadmill that costs less than $1500. You're just killing it. But I put the thing at about 7.5 or 8 incline and get into a comfortable brisk stride and your heart rate will get where you need it to be. I watched all of the Battlestar Galactica's on the treadmill.

Wait another week or so and since most people have already broke their New Years resolution to get back
in shape they'll be lots of treadmills on Craigslist, not that there's not already tons on there in the area already.

Have you checked your local gym / health club? Better clubs regularly update their equipment. They often trade it in but, you might be able to buy one they're going to upgrade. Gym units typically are heavy duty, professional models.

I would start with the brand and model reviews at an independent site like http://www.treadmilldoctor.com/ in the price range and with the features that interest you. Look for durability, reliability, belt size and width for running or walking, incline, etc. Once you decide on a price range and feature set, you can find the most reliable brands and best warranties. Most online treadmill firms offer delivery and setup. After that you can order online if there are support services anywhere near you. Most companies seem to contract with local support services rather than sending out factory reps in any case. Fitness stores may have their own techs, but they will service all the brands a particular store sells.

I have had bad experiences with the Nordic Track brand since they were sold to Icon Fitness, but your experience may differ. Icon Fitness in general has been weak on support, spare parts, etc. for me. Sears has not been a paragon of excellent service either. On the other hand, Smooth Fitness brand has been great in every respect.

You will need to do some routine maintenance and, over time, replace some parts, to keep your treadmill for a long time. The belt needs to be cleaned and lubed with special, but inexpensive lubricants; some brands need silicone, others use belts that are harmed by silicone. The belt will need periodic adjustment as it stretches over time, and in time the belt will need to be replaced.

The treadmill doctor site has lots of good info and sells maintenance kits, so that and similar sites are definitely worth your time.

I have no business or financial connection to the treadmill doctor site or to any of the brands I have owned.

I was just looking in my local cl and found this amusing tidbit:

Pro Form treadmill in good shape. Monitor and speakers are in excellent working condition. The belt will need to be replaced and the machine cleaned where the belt goes. Granny stored bananas on the belt for whatever reason and this made a mess. Machine is "as is".

Yes. Craigslist Wanted. I bet you can get one cheap.

Make sure you also use the alternate name for a treadmill: Laundry rack.
