Question for mechanics, physicists about leveraging 2 wrenches for more power
#11
What Ted said. It doesn't matter whether you're using a two-wrench cheater as you show in the picture, a regular cheater bar, or a longer wrench, the mechanical advantage is the same. I also think you'd have to be crazy to try to break that bolt free like that without using a bunch of PB Blaster and a torch first. It'll be hellish to remove the stud after you break off the bolt head. When you use a torch you should heat the area around the bolt, not the bolt. You want the bolt to be cold and the bolt hole to be hot.

If the main wrench was as long as both wrenches together, would it have the same strength or does the 2nd wrench somehow multiply or increase the leverage by being separate?

It increases torque and decreases effort
you do have to be careful with nuts and bolts not to break them

aside from heat and penetrating oils sometimes lever pressure and shock from a hammer blow will break a nut free without breaking the bolt.

I have old iron DWV pipes in my house and pipe extensions come in real handy.

A single piece longer wrench would be stronger in that you would not be at the mercy of the two wrenches potentially breaking where they meet. The amount of torque or leverage would be about the same but again, you would have to account for mechanical efficiency losses from the two smaller wrenches bending.

If you are replacing that drum just torch it off and not waste time. Knew a guy that when replacing fendersand such on old cars just cut bolts less problem putting in new.

Luckily, that picture is not my job. I just happened to see it the day after changing a flat and having to use a cheater bar I carry with me. I guess seeing the one leverage point between the 2 wrenches made me visualize the leverage principle better. So, I guess a long bar has an infinite number of those points, and after it's all over, it's the length that does the work.

and after it's all over, it's the length that does the work.

That's what she said, but I reminded her that it takes finesse and talent to wield a big tool to best advantage.

I also heard that she does not like cheaters.

True.

And that's why she love me!
