From Jezebel: "10 Reasons You Should Have Watched the Vice Presidential Debate Last Night"

Also, beagledave, you may not be familiar with Jezebel but they aren't a news site. They are a very opinionated and hilarious group of women.

Oh I'm familiar with Jezebel. They aren't the only folks pushing that meme that Ryan ripped off Cobain and Love.

I feel a bit dirty that I'm "defending" Ryan...but I find stuff like this annoying. There are plenty of legitimate points to make about Ryan (the first one you mentioned about his hypocrisy was the best), to have to muddy the waters with nonsense.

The GOP is getting some much needed payback, that's all. If they don't want people to "muddy the waters with nonsense" they shouldn't have established that as a political tactic lo these many years ago. Turnabout is fair play.

OK.

I guess I prefer something else than Tu Quoque.

Was he trying to endear me to him by telling it?

Not trying to be snarky, is that what you meant to write?

I would have phrased the idea, "Was he trying to endear himself to me?"

IIRC, you are from the UK. Is this another example of two nations divided by a common language? (Hmm, this may be the final key that lets me understand "Downton Abbey" without having to replay key scenes.)

Todd's syntactically confused boardkey
Todd you are quite right. There are many examples of our two nations being divided by a common language, but this is not one of them.
This is an example of what I said to August West the other day...that I (wink wink) never write anything less than perfectly!
And as for Downton Abbey, don't bother: I understand it and it's bollocks!

Not to beat a dead horse, but that's a big part of their playbook as well.

http://grammarist.com/usage/endear/
"In its traditional sense, endear (meaning to make dear) is a reflexive verb, with its direct object making itself dear to the indirect object. For example, I might endear myself (direct object) to you (indirect object) with this post if you find it useful, or you might endear yourself (direct object) to me (indirect object) by posting a comment expressing your thanks. Nowadays, endear isn’t always reflexive, but the direct object/indirect object distinction still applies."

Which I think means that I am still wrong. I was aware as I wrote it that it sounded odd, but the larger idea swamped the minor detail. Having said that, if I saw it written by someone else, I might have mentioned it too.

What I said about DA still stands though!

I don't think that the world gets any more recursive than saying "well the other guy engages in Tu Quouque also!" Wink

We are talking about someone who will be playing an important role in national politics and could easily become our commander in chief. It is absolutely valid and necessary to question his integrity, if it appears he presented a personal anecdote that was not actually something that happened to him. Looking at this does not exclude looking at whatever you consider a "legitimate" point as well.

Which part appears like it "didn't happen to him"?

That he and his wife had a baby? That they looked at ultrasound pictures while his wife was pregnant? That the developing baby looked like a bean? That they therefore (like a bazillion other parents) nicknamed the baby some cutesy name like "bean" or "peanut"?

The logic of the meme seems to be...HEY Ryan likes 90s music, and HEY Cobain and Love (like a bazillion other parents...see links above) nicknamed their kid "bean" because of the fetal shape. Ergo..Ryan ripped off their narrative.

THIS is "questioning his integrity"?

And which is it...just some shits and giggles from "opinionated and hilarious women" or "valid and necessary" questioning of Ryan's integrity?

Jesus, who in the world could possibly be motivated to defend these liars this passionately?
