A couple years ago, I was passing through Glacier National Park, and even after hearing all the stories about idiot tourists approaching wildlife, I was shocked to see just HOW STUPID people are. Elk wandering through the parking lot, with people trying to get pictures standing in front of him, and the park ranger approaching them pointing to the SIGN next to them that says "Do Not Approach Wildlife! They are Dangerous Wild Animals"... He gets done with those idiots, and stars herding the Elk through the parking lot, and he has to detour to get some idiots away from the mountain goat that's getting ready to make a field goal with some morons kid who is prodding the kid to get closer to the mountain goat so they can get a picture... According to the ranger, they had to shoo people away from the grizzly bear about half an hour before I got there... Someone was trying to pet the bear! He was "Whuff"-ing at the tourist (which is bear for "you get any closer, and they'll be picking you out of my poop tomorrow..." ). Same thing (same trip) going through Yellowstone, only there it was people about to be steamrolled by irritated Buffalo while tourists tried to pose next to them.

Yellowstone now shows all visitors who stop into the main visitor center a "fail" video showing a foolish woman getting tossed about by a bison. And yet, at a later stop I watched some moron in flip-flops and a video camera chasing after a bear by a parking lot.

.. And the worst part about those morans at Yellowstone getting kilt by bears ?
The poor bear has to be put down as well. Now THAT is a tragedy. ... that description of a bear "Whuffing" has shivers running down my spine from a similar memory of Yellowstone in the 1960's... we heard that from inside our tent one night. Dad calmly instructed us all to lie very, very still. Mr. Bear finished up scaring off whichever idiot surprised him while he was shopping for snacks, and moseyed off. They closed the campground that morning due to Bear Activity. Not to protect the stupid hoomans, but to protect the bears.

Was in Grand Teton back in the '80's and ranger was telling us that a family was driving around and they stopped to get pictures of bison. One animal was lying down and the father wanted it to stand up and he was yelling at it. The bison didn't move so the man walked up to it and kicked it!
The bison killed the father and yes, the family was trying to sue. Morans everywhere...

Bears used to be friendlier in the Sequoia/Yosemite area. Not sure about other wild animals in other places, but it's just a matter of adapting to the environment. "Wild" doesn't have to be mean, and eat people as a food source, or gore them for sport. It does happen, but I bet if humans spent a couple of thousand years being nice to rhinos, instead of cutting off their horns to make boner potions, Chantal's descendents would have a decidedly more rewarding experience while catching a similar photo.

Buzz..... there's a far cry between being 'used to humans' and being domesticated.
Wild is wild. The local deer will walk right up to you and look at you from a few feet away. But get between a doe and her fawn, and she'll kick the crap out of you. Of course, get between Mrs. cbelt3's Chihuahua and her snuggle blanket, and she'll snap at you too. |
