In actuality the word Droid is a trademark of LucasFilm. It is (was?) licensed to Motorola for use in the naming of its phone models that run the android operating system. It has since become used to generally refer to any phone running the android system, much like kleenex is used to refer to a facial tissue.

Licensing aside (yes, I was familiar with the deal), it's a Verizon* thing and no, most people are not calling their phones Droids. Some people are of course confused, but I haven't seen any evidence that is a particularly common usage. At least 80% of the marketplace doesn't have the Droid brand on account of Verizon being a USA carrier, so…

Edit: *Not a Motorola license, a Verizon license, there are non Motorola Droid phones.

sekker,
Have you used TouchWiz or iOS? A fan of either interface is looking for vastly different user experiences than the other provides. As far as design, faux stitching, dimples, faux leather without stitching, color choice, material, microSD slot, removable battery, etc. on high end Galaxies would seem dissimilar to the iPhone design ethos. Not making a value judgement for either design, but they are pretty darn different. Someone with a strong preference for the Galaxy Note is not looking to buy a 5c or 5s and vice versa.

Yes, "Droid" is only by people unfamiliar with Android oriented products. People just call 'em phones.

Exactly. Apple will finally make the technological leap to a bigger screen and finally catch up with Android technology. With a bigger screen. 'Cause bigger screens are technology, you know.

People don't care about technology. They care about usefulness, thus Apple's leap to "catch up."

True, that's even what Apple themselves claimed. Remember that people no longer care about "speeds and feeds"? That might have been when Jobs was still with Apple. Of course, the same Apple happily trumps resolution, processor speed, etc. when they feel like they have a leg up on the competition.

I bet the people who paid full price aren't exactly happy campers right about now.

Why? Even iPhones and Galaxy S/Note models go on sale. $1 on contract is still something like a $400 phone, right? $449 apparently as I just checked the Amazon website. Four months after launch is a little early to give a price break, but with all the great Sony, Samsung, and soon to be new iPhones on the market, Amazon needs to do something to entice people to the mistake that is AT&T exclusivity. The specs are actually pretty solid and a custom ROM on that guy would do wonders. So would an unlocked model.

Just making fun of Internet denizens that loudly and widely proclaim Apple's "technological" backwardness despite having no idea of what technology is. Yep, bigger screens are "advanced technology" but a 64-bit mobile processor and operating system? Meh!

64-bit OS with 1GB RAM. Woo, wee, now we're cooking!!! No, seriously, the iPhone 5s benchmarks well, but the 64-bit isn't a big deal in a vacuum. In a few years, this will be a big deal. Right now, it sure reads like speeds and feeds Steve Jobs claimed didn't matter.
