It's free... until the subscription model gets sprung on you. I'm pretty sure that within a year or two, if you want to keep using your computer, you'll be forced to pay an annual subscription just to keep your windows license activated.
Maybe, but I thought the idea was to data mine your stuff and then offer upgrades for services that do cost money?

Actually, they won't do that, but once they release Windoze 11, they'll force user to upgrade or pay a fee for "continuing maintenance and security updates." They've already announced it.
Well, yes, that's the other shoe dropping. Which doesn't necessarily bug me. If you want a new system, seems like paying for it is not a horrible proposition. People could use one of the free in cost Linux distros if they don't want to ever pay.

True, but most other OS' don't stop offering free security updates to the last major version released. Apple is still offering free security updates for Mountain Lion.

I haven't checked to see how the final EULA went out, but at last check by getting W10 for free you agree to the subscription model going forward. Eg, when W11 comes out, you've already agreed to buy it.

B*stards. I already knew that you were going to be forced to apply security updates when they are released... even if they break something you rely upon to do your job. I wonder how many people realize that when Win 11 comes out, they'll have to pay to update the OS, even if they don't want/need it.

This BS is almost enough to make one pine for the era of expanded vs. extended RAM. :oldfogey:

Wait, that can't be right. Windows 7 is still receiving updates now, right? Anyone have a link with that info?

Win7 is currently still getting security updates. I think it will last through 2018. I would have to search to find the current date they plan to abandon it. I won't do another "clean" install of Win7 again. Even with a SSD it takes too long to install the hundreds of updates.

Win 10 is a free upgrade for existing users, and new licenses cost money. Not a new concept for distributing software.
Since programmers gotta eat, and bandwidth costs money, MS has to find ways to make up for that lost revenue somehow.
I haven't seen anything that suggests that Win 11 will adopt the subscription model, but admittedly, I don't follow MS closely either. Have they said so, or is it just speculation?
