Claudication usually happens during activity and gets better with rest. That isn't what Wurm is describing.

Yikes. However, dochocson is right in that I'm pretty fine while walking. And it doesn't sound like lumbar spinal stenosis either, based on the info I found which states that: Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis are typically comfortable at rest but cannot walk far without developing leg pain. Pain relief is achieved, sometimes almost immediately, when they sit down again.

Methinks Speedy may be on the right track with "old(er) age". My concern is whether I'm more likely to aggravate it by continuing the stairs. Maybe I'll lay off the stairs for a week or so and see if things improve. That might tell me something in and of itself. Meanwhile, I'll have a banana...and maybe some Aleve®. Smile

I vote for a minute of stretching before going up the stairs. I suspect your new exercise routine is exposing an already existing problem.

Not trying to diagnose wurm, just putting it out there...
Pain on initially standing after a period of sitting is classic spinal stenosis.
Edit-- maybe I misinterpreted the OP-- the pain starts and gets worse -while- sitting?

Some 1"x2" hardwood and some ring nails, and I can take care of that spinal fusion for you. No charge!

If you want to go modern, 1" stainless steel square tubing and a bunch of worm drive hose clamps. I can polish 'em up real purty for ya!

Up and down, that seems to me to be a lot of stairs for the start of a regimen.

And/or it may be the years saying stairs just aren't in your workout future.

I second the banana a day supplement.

Top it with two small scoops of ice cream. Vanilla and strawberry would be my recommendation, or chocolate could be substituted for either scoop. No nuts or marshmallows, you want to keep the calories down.

A spritz of whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel or chocolate syrup on each scoop for garnish.

Yes, I like the idea of adding a banana to your daily morning routine.

I'm really liking Dr. RAMd®d's prescription; at least the ice cream part.

Oh, and in answer to those who mentioned stretching before the routine, I must admit I'm not. I guess that's something I ought to be doing, as well.
