Communion is a 1989 drama/thriller film based on the book of the same name by Whitley Strieber. Starring Christopher Walken and Frances Sternhagen, it tells a story of a family that experiences an extraterrestrial phenomenon while on vacation at a remote home in the wilderness during which the father is abducted and all of their lives change. According to Strieber, the story is a real-life account of his own encounter with "visitors", with Walken playing the role of the author.

I think $100 toward college is fine, but why restrict the gift? Just a check for $100 gives the family more flexibility...

Communion (and Confession) is a passage from childhood into 'reason'... deliberately set at a specific age as a child's brain development (on average) has the ability to handle more abstract ideas. It's a landmark for a Catholic child, and some sort of remembrance is appreciated. If the gift giver is Catholic, then the gift is usually something religiously relevant.
My grandfather gave me my first Rosary for my communion. I still have it, and still use it. It travels with me as a 'touchstone' sort of thing. Those beads get a real workout some days.My parents gave me my first wristwatch. Unfortunately my younger sister broke it a month later when she slammed the car door on my arm because she was mad at me.
My great grandparents were still living, and gave small US savings bonds.

Ethyl and I really like giving gifts for kids. Graduation, events like that, and this communion. I'd think $100 is pretty good. The meal is totally different in my mind. Don't know.
No matter, we need to help all our kids!

wife went shopping and found a special money holder for 1st communion. Apparently giving cash is frequent enough that some company bothered to make these gift card/money holders. It is like a gift card holder but longer to accommodate bills.

$50 would be fine or $25. $100 is too much, in my humble Catholic opinion.
