Suggesting a Chromebook is premature. It helps to know the age of the person and a little on how they will use it.

I avoid Lenovo because I do not trust them after their shenanigans of reinfecting their own products with malware, which is a shame because they have the best battery protection/charging software.

Dell has sales every couple of months. This can be a good time because of back to school but it's late to start looking without having a EDU address for the best discount. They also have pretty good refurbs.

I thought about adding the purpose. One, I don't know. I'm asking for a friend. And two, in that price range, does it really matter? You're not going to be doing any hardcore gaming. I figured its just a general use, surf the web, type some emails, create some word docs type machine.

for those needs just get a Chromebook for much less money and be done with it. Word type docs on a chromebook are created with Google Docs.

I've been thinking about getting one as well. Well, another one - I had bought a really cheap one from the local Microsoft Store in 2015

http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1...sg-1831039

But the Windows version is 32 bit and, apparently, to run any modern software now it needs to be 64 bit.

I spent the weekend upgrading it from Windows 7 to 10, thinking it would upgrade it to 64 bit, but it didn't. Oh well

Anyway, I'm looking at a used Thinkpad X1 Carbon. I've always liked the build quality of Thinkpads (my brother in law used to use them for his work) and I actually like the little red nipple in the middle of the keyboard too

Problem is that Carbon is pretty expensive, so finding a good deal on a used one will take some effort

I would go with either a Dell Latitude 7470 or 7480 but not from Dell Refurbished, I would just go to eBay. I used to buy from dellrefurbs but found I can get just as good of units of eBay for substantially less. By going through a retailer with good feedback, I've had no issues. Additionally, eBay return policy is tilted to your benefit.

The 7470 was from 2016
the 7480 from 2017

In this case a 7470 from Dell Refurb with an i5 processor, 256gb SSD, 8gb Ram -- $679
eBay has a refurb 7470, i7, 500gb SSD, 16gb -- $430
or get the touchscreen version @$565.
The 7480 from ebay with i7, 516gb, 16gb is $511(no touchscreen)

There is a chance you would do better if Dell is running a 40% discount, but I have noted the price goes up a bit when the coupon is issued.

Stay the away from the 1st and 2nd gens. I have 200ish of the 2nd gen X1 Carbon at work that we just replaced with MacBook Airs. They were horrible machines. Super Flakey, logic board problems, bad drivers, problems connecting to mutiple monitors. The 3rd and 4th gen aren't too bad. I have about 40 of those we are hanging on to.

I think the problem is Dell, HP, Lenovo all make great laptops but they also make shite laptops so it's really hard to judge what is good and what isn't. Personally, I picked up a Dell XPS 9360 earlier this year off ebay that was closer to $800 in price but I love that thing and use it everyday.
