How...? An octopus caught a bald eagle in a death grip.

They may in fact prove to be an alien life form.

Which is why Watchmen is creeping me out. I'm on Episode 4 or so where Glass is getting visitors at the end. Makes me wonder why Mr. Eagle didn't use its powerful beak to teach Mr. Octopus a lesson. Ock probably got some scratches and gashes in the struggle, but Eagle 1 was probably too busy trying to escape drowning. Swooping down to pluck a fish out of water is one thing. Being dragged under - a whole new WTF experience. I highly doubt the octopus stealthily climbed a tree, caught the eagle, and then dragged it into the water. You might have a point. More likely the eagle was going for a fish, and Ock was either going for the same fish, or just in the neighborhood and decided to check it out. Also the octopus seemed to be more generally curious about the eagle than trying to drown or consume it. Or maybe it was a little put off by the claws and the amount of resistance, normally seen by Ock as nonexistent or futile, at best. Furthermore, I wonder if the fishermen would have saved the octopus from the eagle if the fight had occurred on a tree branch above the water? Curious. I wouldn't. And eagle plucking fish out of water is in its elements- sea, land, and air. Tree octopi? Not so much. And I'd be truly, really creeped out if that happened. Anyway, they're choice. That's why I don't participate in making animal documentaries (not that it's ever come up). I'd be way too judgmental and interfering. "At the end of the day both animals are alive and well and they went their separate ways and we feel pretty good about what we did." And so they should. The naysayers that objected can stand by and let nature take its course and feel pretty good about that. Everybody's got their something.

Grilled octopus is excellent, very unlike squid which feels like you're chewing on a piece of a tire.

Perhaps the eagle shouldn't have been singing Beatles songs. It might have come across to the octopus as an invitation:
"I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus's garden in the shade"

I like octopus, too, but I stopped eating it a few years ago after watching a special about how intelligent they are, and esp since killing them often involved whacking them against cement. Seemed very cruel. I have been sticking to squid. (But, yes, I still eat most other animals.)

Seemed very cruel. I have been sticking to squid. (But, yes, I still eat most other animals.) I similarly wrestled with the moral implications of eating octopus, but I wound up justifying it by reminding myself that: A. I didn't know the octopus I was eating personally. B. The restaurant where I got it prepared a large bowl of octopus ceviche every day (probably several because it was a good seller when it was only available as part of a sampler platter but now it's available as an entree as well) and whether or not I had a serving every two or three weeks didn't affect how much they prepared daily at all. Would I go out specifically looking to catch, prepare, and eat an octopus? Almost certainly not, but if it's already on the menu... |
