Where are the safe guards of our democracy?

Courts.
A federal judge this week stopped the federal agents in Portland from arresting or harassing journalists or legal observers. That was filed by the ACLU of Oregon.

Other lawsuits are pending.

The US Attorney for Portland is a key player here in making sure the rights of citizens within his jurisdiction are respected. His office will be responsible for prosecuting people detained by these federal police, but he is also responsible for investigating the police themselves if they have operated unlawfully. We'll see how he does.

Congress
The House can investigate and they can withhold funding for DHS.

Inspectors General
We still have them, even though we know how Trump has behaved in the face of their critical reports.

I've got a better one. Where are your Democrats In Congress?

Why when I watch the news do I see the awful Chuck Schumer delivering a few dry remarks?

Or Nancy Pelosi doing a solo act?

There are HUNDREDS of Democrats in Congress and in the face of a gestapo takeover of our cities are not there as INDIVIDUALS leading the charge to protect Americas.

Why leave it to a few embattled mayors and Senators of the states invaded? It's the United states under assault...and these guys are sitting on their rumps planning their election speeches.

The Oregon congressional delegation has been screaming. But the media does not really care. Merkley and Wyden are well respected, but they have been anti Trump and anti police tactics for long before this....so their views are discounted. The media want to see the other side protest the actions. That gives it credibility.

But MAGAs.

To carry on with Lemon's list of guardrails, the biggest one is....

Norms. The idea that there are certain rules of the road and certain lines not to be crossed. What we have learned is that we have so many of these, and not nearly enough real laws. The reason is that the system was designed so that if a president violated the norms voters would care. It would mean norms were self reinforcing.

But the MAGAs love the fact that Trump violates the norms, from pussy grabbing to firing FBI directors to bribing Ukrainians. I know it is impolitic and a bunch of you'all might jump me but a big part of the problem is that 30-odd percent of our fellow Americans are, well, deplorable.

Pretty fair assesment.

The system is, right now, (I quickly looked it up early this morning) The Cabinet and VP can declare the pres unfit, and transfer power to the VP> Starts the clock ticking. The Pres has 4 days to dissagree and present his case, if able too. Then Congress and the House vote if the 25th Amendment move is just. This is within the week. In all this, from the first movement from the Cabinet, the pres is theoretically powerless. This can all be wrapped up in a week, and from the first minutes of the movement, the VP gets sworn in as acting President. And if he/she isn't fit, then the Speaker becomes Pres.

But these people need to step up, and think of others, and not themselves. They need to ignore the possible impact to their careers, and think of the country, and what's best for our survival and our recovery.

They aren't going to step up. They haven't stepped up.

Please verify this. The 25th can resolve this and allow a course correction in less than a week. But they won't.

A tool has no value if you don't use it. They are powerless unless they use the tools our Founding Fathers gave us. They won't pick it up. They won't swing the hammer.

Pence will never do this.

Our democracy lay in the hands of its citizens and not it's politicians. When evil is flitting about and around us, it's because we opened the door and invited it in.

This is sort of true. We are in a 'representative democracy'. It is the JOB of the Senate to defend our Constitution. In that, our system has failed.

And not to belabor it, it this has happened precisely because the MAGAs like Trump better than the GOP Senators. The Senators are terrified of Trump tweeting about them.

This is, I think, what causes the Lincoln guys the most pain. From a tweet this morning, Reed Galen, key Lincoln guy:

"Six years ago I helped @DanSullivan_AK with debate prep in his race for #aksen. I could not have believed at the time he would have fallen so far, violating his oath and failing to defend the Constitution.

2020 is all about @DrAlGrossAK"
