This Anthony Bourdain clip from The Big Short describes the process pretty well.

Isn’t the history of chili like this? It’s only modern home chefs who make a point of buying ingredients for chili. Everyone else already HAS the ingredients.

Yep, Todd Wilbur the food "top secret recipe" guy has that one and I've made it, it's a very good copy of their chili. I make burgers on the grill and the leftovers are used for the chili meat, the grilled flavor makes the chili all that much better.

Wendy’s Chili

SERVINGS 12
YIELD 1 big potful

2 lbs ground beef, left over hamburgers are the best.
1 (29 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (29 ounce) can kidney beans (with liquid)
1 (29 ounce) can pinto beans (with liquid)
1 cup diced onion (1 medium onion)
1/2 cup diced green chili pepper (2 chilies)
1/4 cup diced celery (1 stalk)
3 medium tomatoes, chopped
3 teaspoons cumin powder
3 tablespoons chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper
2 teaspoons salt
2 cups water

That sounds pretty good...will have to try it.

I've known this for over 3 decades. Why do youngsters claim they just discovered this? :dunno: It was never a particularly mysterious secret.

Sometimes people are just looking for something to be upset about.

It's not even that. Often when a young person discovers something, they assume they are the FIRST EVER person in the history of mankind to discover it and rush to share it with the rest of us. I'm pretty sure everyone here experienced such a moment or two.

Many years ago Wendy's was on my lunch rotation and I would get the 99¢ chili and put it on a baked potato for 99¢ and have a pretty good lunch for very little cash.

But then I also ate Subway tuna sandwiches back then too.
