Does the grille feature on an EV have a purpose other than aesthetics? There are potentially some air intake needs, e.g. AC/heatpump coils and battery and motor cooling.

It's not about having a fake grille, it's about designing a car with an unfinished look, like something is missing.
Design a vehicle that doesn't look like something is missing and I see no need for a styling cue such as a fake grille.

I thought I was pretty clear about how I felt regarding design cues.
At some point, vehicle design may improve to my eye, on the points I addressed, such that there won't be a discussion like this.
If not, there may be another discussion, and the opportunity the chide me on my opinions on styling cues.
Until then, get the fsck off my lawn.

I'm curious about that too.
It addresses the issue about what freedom/constraints the EV designers have when they are trying to provide the required functionality.
Of course, that doesn't mean we shouldn't ask for an appealing design within those constraints.

While EVs can be fast with a "linear acceleration" that produces astonishing 0-60 mph times, they often lack the driving dynamics that many performance car owners enjoy. It's a problem auto executives have privately been attempting to solve as the industry transitions to EVs.....
I'm still upset that my gasoline automobile doesn't have the driving dynamics of my old horse and buggy. :dunno:

Some folks are probably still bemoaning the disappearance of automobiles with four distinct, separate-from-the-body fenders...
As would be their preference, and their right to mention it if they felt like it.
Other people just wouldn't let that stand.
