It is what is supposed to guarantee us protection from a tyranical government.

About as effective a protection as washing your hands before giving an Ebola victim a tongue bath.

Eeww. But point made.

We spend $800b a year to have a military that could take on China or worse and win.
How exactly do individual civilian gun owners think they'd do against that behemoth?

The whole point of Trump wanting to use our military for "local law enforcement" is to terrorize citizens, and if he's allowed it would work.

Both Lux and Lemon Drop seem to forget 2 things. First, you are assuming the entire US military will obey illegal commands that contradict the US Constitution. They took an Oath that says they are required to disobey unlawful orders. And #2, the really big one. We went through this before, and the little guys threw off a tyrannical ruler once before. Remember, back in the day that both sides fighting in the Revolutionary War were British. The colonists were outnumbered, outgunned, had less resources, smaller ships, far less ships, etc. Those small ships took larger ships. And those were used to take even more, larger ships, and so on.

Doesn't take a whole lot to take out humvees or APCs. Now you have the M2s and Mark 19s. And so on. How did the Russians fair for those 2 decades, before we got bogged down for 2 decades? The insurgents had horses, HiLux pickups and RPGs.

Afghans had terrain on their side - BIG TIME. If they were sitting in a prairie town they would have been wiped out.

A single drone pilot 1000mi away would finish your little uprising before it starts.

It is not 1780. The Red Coats are not lining up like lambs to the slaughter while the mountain boy patriots hide in the hills.

Back to 2025, you're saying Smote that you believe at least some American forces would turn on their countrymen, thus the need for civilians to heavily arm themselves. But not enough to make impossible for said civilians to prevail in the battle?

Personally I don't think that's a likely scenario.

I don't believe Trump will legally win the right to act upon any of the things listed in his crazy EO.

There will be no need for troops to disobey illegal orders, because none will be issued. Though that could make a good movie.

I don't trust the civilian politicians in charge of DOD now, but I do trust our military commanders.

Trump issues illegal orders hourly. Just that none have involved our military opening up on fellow US citizens on US soil. Might never happen. But he could make that order at any minute. The fact that we are even discussing it says voluimes.

The country is divided; there is no reason to believe that the military isn't divided as well.

If the military begins fighting itself, then the nation is done for anyway.

I agree with you 100%

But I don't expect military leaders to go along with any such illegal order. I think even Rump knows these are guardrails he can't push over. He loves the tough guy threat though.

Of course people serving in the armed forces have varying political opinions, always have. But commanders understand their roles in our democracy. Not looking for a coup anytime soon.
