Pressure washer for driveway crack weed removal?

To clarify some things...

I would PREFER to avoid chemical means of weed killing.... My cat likes to roll around on that concrete, and I do have a dairy just down the road (which shares the same road-side drainage ditch).
I'm not horribly worried about pollution, etc, but if I can do this without unnecessary chemicals, I'd like to.

I have maybe as much as a couple hundred feet of weedy cracks on the driveway... so mechanical methods do not excite me much, being relatively lazy.

I was thinking that the pressure washer (assuming it isn't TOO agressive) would leave clean surfaces for a filler compound to bond to....


I've got more research on crack fillers to do before going out to rent a pressure washer... so keep the ideas coming!

Look around for a product called AllDown. It is an organic herbicide and sounds like a good product for what you want to do.

Pressure Washer works fine, it does not "Scarify" concrete, it does blast the weeds clean away.
It is also against the law in California to pour gasoline, or motor oil on the ground.

I understand a product called "Agent Orange" works great on both small and large weeds and is safe for use around dairy farms.

I'll talk to a buddy of mine that used to do concrete and see what he thinks of the patch/filler... and price a pressure washer rental this week.

I think Sears sells a nice crack hoe that you can carefully use around the yard. Keeps pollution out of the Pacific as well.

I bought one for the house at Home Depot. $89 for a 1400psi that works well on driveways, screens, my deck and getting the green stuff off my siding. If your rental cost is close you may want to buy one instead.

Depending on your neighborhood demographics you may be able to get a local "crack hoe" to actually do the pressure washing for cheap and no trip to Sears!

You could also blast the weeds with a small propane torch.

Pressure wash as deeply as possible, pull up weeds by weakened roots, apply lots of white vinegar to acidify the soil without poisonous runoff, patch with concrete filler. Worked well for me 3 years ago with no weed return.

1 package salt
1/2 bottle dish soap
1 gallon water
1/2 cup vegetable oil

Mix well and spray early in the morning on a hot day.

Add just a little Round Up for a more lasting kill on some of the tougher weeds.
