It's a GSM thing. Google "Location Update", it's just a burst of data between the phone and the network.
It's not an issue with CDMA or WCDMA phones.

Is anyone else being driven slowly mad by interference from their cell phone?

That was a big problem with Nextel. I'm using CDMA now and never have any interference.
Is GSM 800MHz like Nextel?

OK, got it. My answer is basically the same, though. I've never noticed any interference when using it around other devices. It is GSM, because I just verified it through Googling the model.

[quote RAMd®d]AD, it's not an at&t/cingular thing, it's a GSM thing.
The *phone* sounds fine. It's the interference it generates in powered/amped speakers. I have no idea what's happening. My mail is set to manually update only, so barring phone calls and text messages, I don't know what it is. I get a very strong signal at home, so it *shouldn't* be searching. I'm also pretty much right under a tower here. I wonder if getting a stronger signal actually makes it worse.

Yea, plays havoc with my wireless security camera, but the cordless phone does the same.

H',
The same thing happens with my phone and speakers. Great example... I can be lounging on a couch, with my SE W810i on a nearby night table. The speakers of the TV that is on a chest of drawers on the opposite side of the room will begin to crackle with interference. My cell phone will ring a second or so later. Same thing in my Jeep and the phone doesn't even have to be preparing to ring. It just has to be powered on. That alone is enough to cause interference. It didn't do it with the stock radio of my crown vic or my parents aging lexus. But, always in vehicles with aftermarket radios, even with extra shielding. Robert

I get this...
My speakers hooked to my G5 buzz at the same time my cell phone GSM / loco updates. it only does it if the RAZR is sitting on the desk within 203 ft of the speakers. In my experience it's a powered speakers thing. 3p

Wow, what a big desk you have. Your office must be HUGE. Ha. My iPhone (ATT) would do this constantly if left to its own devices (literally, ha). I just keep it away from its temptations. That seems to solve the problem. Amazing how that concept works!
