Free in-store pickup at Fry's
#11
[quote jdc]is that SF bay area only?
Hard to know for sure (I am in the SF bay area), the online prices at Frys.com are certainly nationwide. When I selected the in-store pickup it asked for a zipcode and then offered the store closest to me, so I don't know if they offer pickup at all B&M stores, or maybe they just need the zipcode to check to make sure it's in stock at the local store.

It also waited until fairly late in the ordering process before letting you select the in-store option, after credit-card info was entered.

[quote bhaveshp]Do they actually 'ship' an item to the store - or pick up from the store's existing inventory?
Looks like it's existing inventory, I got the confirmation email within an hour of placing the order, saying that it was ready for pickup. I haven't driven down there to pick it up yet.

It also says that the credit card will not be charged until it is picked up, and it needs to be picked up by March 3rd to keep that price.

So far, nothing about the process seems unreasonable to me, just very convenient, like the old Outpost.com days, except even faster (some driving required, but I was going to go there for some other stuff anyway).

[quote M A V I C]Drat, just tried it with that same product but didn't get the option.
When I was initially looking at the item in the basket and calculated shipping quotes, it didn't mention in-store.

It didn't give me the in-store option until after going through the purchase process (after credit card info). I had been planning to pay for the $5 ground shipping and had proceeded with the order and was only offered in-store near the end.

I tried it again, with the same product, and got to the point where if I clicked again the order would submit... still no option for in-store pickup. I'm in Seattle, fwiw.

I just did some google searching, and found this on Fry's website (near the end of the page). Looks like it's only available in Silicon Valley area stores. Sorry for the trouble, but even with $5 shipping, that RAM is a good deal.

Our in-store pick up feature allows you to order online 24 hours a day and pick up at your nearest Fry's Electronics store. In-store pick up is fast, easy, and free (no shipping charge)

How do I choose in-store pick up option when shopping on line?
(Silicon Valley stores only)

1. Simply click the "check out" button once you have selected the items you would like to purchase.
2. Enter your express account information or billing information.
3. Select "New! Store pick-up" option and enter your credit card security code.
4. Enter your zip code or city and state to check store availability.
5. Choose the most convenient store in your area.
6. Review your order and click on "submit order" button.
7. Once your order is ready, an email will be sent to you confirming your products are ready for pick up.
8. Print copy of email and bring it to the selected Fry's Electronics location to purchase your items.

Cool. A tiny additional perk for living in Silicon Valley ;-)

I frequently check this site for Fry's deals

On it you'll notice that their prices are regional in nature.

Yes, I check the newspaper ad every Friday, but this situation was about getting something that wasn't on sale locally at the lower price that was on their website. It's not in a newpaper ad, that was the first thing I looked for this morning.

Is a Frys pretty much like a MicroCenter? I've never been to Frys, but have to MicroCenter.
