The Apple modems are cool. Very small, about the size of a pack of gum. Use mine every day with a 3rd party app called ABDialer and FileMaker Pro with scripts to dial customers, vendors, friends. That was the first thing I checked out when I got my MacPro. I gotta have my auto-dialing! :-)

The "Apple Modem" is actually this one.:
Motorola SM56 Data/Fax Modem
Don't know if Apple did any FirmWare tweaks.

Yes.
Not yet. A Fax gets legal standing that email with attachments has not yet received in all jurisdictions.

I have seen external USB modems with a Motorola brand chip for $20, but I have not dug for enough info to know if they are Mac compatible.
