[quote kap]One main reason why it's heart-breaking to visit an animal shelter or and adoption event.
Tell me about it. I cannot go into one without breaking down.

Ok I'm confused, are you saying that anyone who has a cat that's strictly indoors is a hoarder? Or are you just trying to point out that having a strictly outdoor cat is as extreme as being an animal hoarder? Or something else? If so, what?

Cats and dogs with nothing more than an address never really have a home…

I just wanted to make sure mrbigstuff knew the prevailing beliefs and wishes of those adopting out cats. If there is some sort of inside shelter for the cat when the weather is cold and nasty, and food and water is REGULARLY provided, I think it is OK. I personally wouldn't do it, but I have a good friend who does. His cats are very timid and don't leave his yard very often.

I don't think an "outdoor" cat is really a pet, and nor is to the cat.

It's nice that you would give the cat food and vet care. You may be surprised how many feral cats get that, too. So what you're proposing isn't a whole lot better than just abandoning the cat. Sorry.
On the bright side, I think you earn more points for not adopting an animal you can't commit to, than you do in adopting an animal when it's a mistake, no matter how good your intentions.
Mot unwanted cats die horrible deaths. The lucky ones are put to sleep. And as long as people refuse to spay or neuter their cats, there will be millions of unwanted cats.

Not all indoor cats have long lives. 1,240,00 hits as evidence
If you want to have a pet, provide it with a life centered [somewhere] between the two extremes.
Is it the lean livin' ?

Spay and Neuter is the only way to go!
I think if the service is more affordable more animal owners would be willing to have their pets spayed and neutered. Some local shelters to us provide low-cost preventive cares. Our own town offers similar, tho' fewer, services, i.e. rabies shot, even at a lower cost.

Kap,
If one can not afford an animal then they don't deserve to have one!
And, don't let me get started on humans!
