Next time you are in Paris and pay $5 for a can of Coke remember VAT and their wacky tax system. There is a segment of people who for some reason are constantly fantasizing about making America look more like Europe. Form cars, to houses, to price of gas and now this.
Yes, heaven forbid! Next thing you know they'll make us have universal health care and access to higher education. Those dreadful Euros and their wacky tax. Cheeze whiz was good enough for my pop and its good enough for me. Of course, we should subsidize the necessities, like Coke, because, my God, $5 for a can! One can, and not even supersized? The horror! I suppose we'll have to start measuring them in liters, too. Humiliating. Next thing, we'll have to spell it litre. Like, that's so totally unAmerican. (but maybe not Pepsi because they're a little socialisty).
How about a little originality? How about coming up with a tax system for them to follow? This country did not become great( I am sure it makes you very uncomfortable) by copying what others did. Anyone can sell Coke for $5 and use the money(assuming people are stupid enough to continue consuming $5 Coke). Lead, innovate, think. Come up with something to make the world go wow, why didn't we think of that?

Oh G-d.
We didn't become great by ignoring the progress of others.
Until you come up with something better, copy and copy well.

Geez, you'd think europe was the promised land, the way a lot of people talk. I agree with Dakota. There are a lot of people who want the u.s. to be europe. Of course it's some fictional amalgam of their perceptions of a europe that doesn't exist, but never mind that. kj.

Premise #1- this country is great
Premise #2- this country did not copy what others did
Premise #3- countries around the globe sit in wait of the next american innovation

Sorry, kj, I spent a good chunk of my life over there- it does exist.
This country could learn loads from the way europeans do things. That said, I really have no opinion on VAT.

We could learn a lot from the way people _here_ do things. So what? Who would ever say there's nothing they do well in europe? Just curious what things come to mind that they do super well? I noticed a few things, and I actually think I might even fit in better there, but I don't long for the U.S. to be european. For those who like the VAT, try buying a little liquor in scandinavia. That'll cure ya. kj.

I remember being surprised when I traveled from Boston to Canada that the government there actually owned the retail liquor outlets and determined hours and pricing.
As odd as the New England Blue Laws were then, the Canadian laws seemed odder.
People lined up at the state liquor store overnight, like a current day WalMart crew they would be there early and anxious. Perhaps the only difference is the addiction.
edit: the Baltimore influence made me do it.

I assume you think they are all wrong. I rest my case.
