Should spin up no matter what though, right?

h', if the power plug is in properly, yes, the drive should spin up no matter what. (Have to be careful to make sure it is in properly though... the connection can sometimes be loose and you have to really make sure it's firmly in there.)

Typically, if the adapter is connected, it shows a red LED on the top which glows either dimly or strongly. Strongly usually suggests that the drive is configured improperly (e.g., set to slave or cable select); dimly may mean that you haven't plugged in the power cable yet. When the data is transferring, the LED flashes. Also, I seem to recall that some very much older drives (like 6-20GB ) may not work with the adapter, but I'm not sure. When I say hot plug, what I mean is, plug in drive power first, then attach adapter to drive, then plug in the USB end. If this doesn't work, then unplug and replug the USB. If that doesn't work, try unplugging and replugging the power. Repeat as necessary...

Also, I got mine from PCMicroStore, can't vouch for the other types.

I see. Maybe I wasn't clear, I was really hoping for info about this particular item. Glad you mentioned that you were referring to a different model.
