Make sure the temperature range is optimal when you do the job, and don't skip the primer even though it costs almost as much as the paint.

I would second the epoxy based finishes. Very nice and durable. If you want something a bit easier, look at the laminate snap and click products. Easy to install, pretty cheap and they look good. If you want an really nice floor and are willing to pay the price (around $6 a sq. foot), cork flooring is really nice. It is an easy install (again, the snap and click product), very durable and has the added advantages of natural insulation over the concrete and a great underfoot feel.
